About Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) |
|
Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an 8-week experiential educational course, which cultivates emotional, psychological and physical resilience and well being. It brings together meditative practices with current scientific understandings of the brain. It provides intensive and systematic training in formal and informal mindfulness practices. This includes learning how to cultivate an observant, accepting and compassionate stance towards your own thoughts, emotions, body sensations and impulses. MBSR is suitable for beginners and those with more meditation experience,
The program has eight 2.5 hour weekly classes and one 5-hour class on a Sunday. The emphasis is on experiential learning - practising becoming more mindful - rather than on learning about theory. In each class you will be guided through mindfulness meditation practices, and do gentle mindful movement. You'll receive individually tailored feedback from the facilitator and a scientific rationale for the practice. We'll explore key topics such as stress physiology, emotional regulation, cognitive behavioural strategies, interpersonal communication and implementing self-care through group discussion and short exercises.
An integral part of the training is your home practice. Sometimes we say that the learning happens at home and the classes are the catch-up! Your home practice is made up of meditation and mindful movement exercises that are about 30 minutes long. We'll give you audio recordings and a course book are to guide this. To get the most out of the course, you will need to be able to practise about 45 minutes per day, although not necessarily in a single block. If yo feel this will be difficult you are welcome to have a chat with the teacher before booking in.
Extensive research has shown that most course participants report:
- an increased ability to relax,
- more energy and enthusiasm for life,
- improved self-esteem and self-confidence,
- improved concentration, memory and effective decision-making.
Participants have also reported a lasting decrease in:
- psychological symptoms such as stress, anxiety, depression and irritability,
- negative thinking patterns and physical symptoms of a range of a chronic health problems including pain, headaches and irritable bowel syndrome.

This 8-week course is a follow-on course from MBSR. It aims to deepen the benefits of a mindfulness practice by exploring practices that cultivate compassion for ourselves and others. Mindfulness is often defined as, ‘the awareness that arises when we focus our attention in the present moment in a kind and non-judgemental way’. As we become more mindful it can often become more evident that approaching ourselves and others in a kind way is not so easy. Luckily compassion can be developed through practice.
Research shows that motivating ourselves through kindness, rather than criticism increases our happiness and reduces anxiety and depression. Compassion training can help us move through life in a richer way. It can help us manage difficult life experiences with generosity rather than harshness and can support us in feeling more connected and less alone.
Course Structure. The course is 8 weeks long and each class runs for 2.5 hours. This is complemented by a 3.5-hour practice session on a Sunday. The course will be made up of a mixture of guided practice, discussion, teacher input and exercises. There will be a daily home practice using audio recordings (mostly 15-20 minutes) and encouragement to do some journalling. The course will be offered just once a year beginning in February.
Prior Experience
This course has been designed as a graduate course for people who have some mindfulness training, preferably in the form of MBSR or other training that has led you to a daily immersion in mindfulness practice. If you have not done MBSR but think you may have done something similar contact the teacher to talk it through.

Circle of Security parenting in your home
Circle of Security™ (COS) is an 6-8 week relationship based educational parenting program for parents & care-givers of children aged 0-5. It aims to cultivate secure attachment, a positive indicator for resilience and well being throughout life.
The COS ™ program provides a framework to increase awareness of our children’s needs and to check whether our responses meet those needs. This allows for greater choice when parenting, particularly in moments of stress.
Understanding the COS ™ framework can be particularly helpful in breaking the hold of problematic relational patterns of parenting, that can be passed from one generation to the next and compromise a child’s relationships throughout their life.
Decades of university-based research have shown that secure children when compared to less secure children: have increased empathy, higher self-esteem, better relationships with parents and peers, enhanced school readiness, are more able to handle emotions effectively and know how to be kind to others. They can solve problems on their own & are more likely to turn to carers for support when in trouble when compared with children who are not secure.
The course runs over 6 weekly sessions of 1 1/2-2 hours. To participate gather a group of 4-12 parents and run it in your own home.
